In the dining room, we focused on preserving and highlighting its historic layers, with particular attention to the 19th-century stenciling uncovered during a restoration in the 1980s. Using Paraloid B72, we carefully stabilized fragile sections of the original stencil paint to prevent further deterioration while maintaining their visibility for future study and appreciation. This process involved meticulous application and precise conservation techniques to ensure the delicate patterns remained intact. Additionally, I researched and applied historically accurate stenciling techniques to complement the existing layers, drawing inspiration from period design manuals and examples from similar historic homes. This work emphasized the craftsmanship and aesthetic traditions of the era, showcasing the intricate artistry that would have defined the room's appearance during its prime. Through these efforts, we aimed to not only preserve the space's history but also to deepen understanding of the techniques and materials used by early artisans.
